Bill and Betty (nee Moore) Hillis met in Lanarkshire, Scotland and married there in 1939. Bill was the youngest son of John and Sarah (nee Cunningham) of Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Betty was the youngest of the three children of Alexander and Jeanie (nee Dunsmore) from High Blantyre, Lanarkshire.

Bill and Betty had two sons, John (known as Jack) in 1940 and Brian in 1944.

In December 1949, Bill travelled to Toronto, Canada to find work and establish a home for his family. In April, 1950, Betty and the boys followed.
